Ayurveda has a long history of supporting and enhancing pregnancy. In fact, Ayurveda values the preconception phase as much, if not more, than the pregnancy period itself. The preconception period is an excellent opportunity to provide the greatest nutrition and care for you and your future child.
Ayurvedic preconception care and treatments make use of our body’s inherent ability to cleanse and regenerate. Regardless of your previous fertility experiences, Ayurveda provides a comprehensive approach to fertility that recognises both male and female responsibilities as equal. In today’s world, women seeking to embrace motherhood face more challenges than ever before due to many factors, such as long working hours and stress. This has led to an increased number of women moving into IVF, egg donation, or surrogacy as an easy solution. However, before considering these extreme solutions, your body needs to be prepared for bearing the child. According to Ayurveda, motherhood is not something one can demand of oneself; rather, it is seen as an invitation extended to an unborn soul, which can prepare every woman to embrace motherhood.
Why are Ayurvedic fertility treatments important?
According to the broad vision of Ayurveda, fertility is more than the physical act of becoming pregnant. The first step towards fertility is becoming a parent, which occurs much before conception. It starts with your initial sincere wish to start a new family. This yearning acts as a call to the new soul. Thus, it needs to be realised that fertility is a spiritual and emotional process just as much as a physical one.
The main goal of these Ayurvedic periconceptional care and treatments is to help your body and mind relax, focus your energy, and redirect it to move it lower. This downward energy is called “APANA VATA” which is found in the lower abdomen and pelvic area. It is responsible for ovulation, micturition, elimination, orgasm, and implantation. APANA VATA is the energy of “Muladhara Chakra” and is associated with the earth element. APANA VATA health contributes to the balance of energy in this chakra, and the Muladhara Chakra’s health benefits affect APANA VATA functions as well.
This healthy energy of the root chakra and a well-functioning APANA VATA govern the production of mature ovum or eggs in the female body. Its secretion occurs through ovulation and movement through the fallopian tubes.
When your APANA VATA is insufficient in the pelvic area, its normal functions can be disrupted, resulting in immature eggs or a lot of eggs that are not of average size or quality. If these poor-quality eggs get fertilised, they will unfortunately not survive the full pregnancy period, which can cause miscarriage.
Usually, after this happens, the bodily rescue mission “PITTA DOSHA” comes to the pelvic area. When Pitta occupied this place, Pitta inherited “fire” or heat coming to this area as well. This excessive heat disturbs sperm activity as well as eggs. Sometimes, when a fertilised egg is preparing for implantation, this heat will attack the egg (similar to an autoimmune condition), which may also result in a miscarriage. It’s like you’re trying to put your eggs in a hot oven.
Ayurvedic fertility treatments first focus on detoxification and correcting the diet to balance the bodily doshas and mind. It creates a correct and balanced APANA VATA in the pelvic area to select the best possible egg. If you have eggs, it doesn’t matter if you are 25 or 45 years old. These treatments will balance your PITTA energy (heat) to the optimal level to support your fertilised egg and protect it.
If you are planning your journey to motherhood, prioritise balancing your body’s doshas and ensuring that your uterine cavity is a nurturing space to enhance fertility where babies can safely develop during the nine months before birth.
How do doshas (energies) work for fertility?
Vata – Helps to collect the good egg, mature it, then fertilise with sperm and travel to the correct place for implantation.
Pitta – Supply the good womb condition by correcting heat to sustain life.
Kapha – After implantation, it helps the foetus grow and maintains a strong connection with it.
Types of Ayurvedic treatments for fertility
We offer two types of treatments as part of our fertility programme. Before these treatments, the patient is thoroughly examined by an Ayurvedic Physician. The Prakrithi (basic constitution) and Vikriti (details of morbidity) are documented in detail. Then the treatment lineup, materials, and medicines that are needed are discussed.
Detox (Panchakarma Treatment)
Full treatment can be 3 hours every day 5 days
This is an oil application and massage. (An oil is selected based on the type of condition that is treated.) It helps to relax the body from head to toe, remove stress and emotional distress, and re-energise the body.
- Shiro Dhara
This gentle pouring of medicated oil onto the forehead results in mental calmness, triggering an adaptive response to underlying tension and negative emotions. It is specifically recommended when there is an aggravation of the Vata and Pitta doshas in the mind and body.
- Pinda Swedha
This is one of the most significant sudation therapies utilised in Panchakarma. Throughout the procedure, the patient’s body is consistently massaged in different areas using a medicated rice pouch.
Vasti is a treatment called “A Ray of Hope for Infertility.”. This treatment is one of the most important panchakarma treatments in Ayurveda and helps to balance vitiated APANA VATA in your pelvic area. Medicated oil is used as the main liquid. When administered, the medicated oil stays for a longer duration inside the intestine, which will help to calm and balance your doshas.
Egg Enhancement – Fertility Treatment
After detoxifying your body, we administer these specialised treatments to enhance your eggs. We recommend six cycles for optimal results. For a healthy pregnancy and child, it’s crucial to undergo these treatments during the first 5 to 11 days of each cycle. Sometimes, the doctor will advise on the most effective cycle for fertility based on your ovulation and menstrual cycle.
This treatment is specifically designed to prevent miscarriages and aid in implantation by targeting the reduction of excessive internal heat in the pelvic area. Additionally, it promotes circulation, corrects imbalanced doshas, and improves the condition of the womb.
This Vasti (enema) involves administering medicated oil through the birth passage (vaginal tract) into the uterus. It helps in expelling the morbid doshas from the uterus and eradicating the morbidity and diseases related to the female urogenital system. This also enhances the eggs.
