This intensive diploma course is fully accredited by the CMA (Complementary Medical Association) and comprehensively covers the theory and practical training in all the major traditional Ayurvedic therapies.

1. Syllabus, materials & learning support

The highest quality teaching and learning support by means of written materials, video recordings of demonstrations and a high content of supervised practice with doctors and senior therapists. The syllabus is comprehensive and focuses on the most effective use of treatments and the skills to give such treatments.

Students are given training in identifying imbalances in the doshas in order to effectively use the appropriate medicated specialist oils, as well as training in the properties and contra-indications of certain oils and procedures.

2. Structure, Syllabus & Faculty

Our students come from diverse professional backgrounds and different countries, seeking to learn about Ayurvedic therapy for its healing and rejuvenating qualities.

With that in mind, we committed to offering our courses in different structures several times a year to accommodate them all. From alternate weekend teachings over 3 months to one week intensives to part online courses. All courses are taught only by those who have extensive experience of using Ayurvedic therapies specifically as treatments.

What is included in the course?
Our aim is that students use the extraordinary methods of treatment to help people achieve a better state of health and well-being. Knowing from decades of experience in treating people though the Ayurvedic Clinic for a wide range of disorders to the most acute cases, and for general well-being, we know how good patients feel when these techniques are properly applied, well-executed and use the highest quality products. We teach massage therapy as a practice in service and mindfulness. Our therapists work from the heart, which is always felt by the patient.

How is the course and study structured?

7-day Intensive:
The intensive massage course is 7 extended days of theory and practice. We allow extended practice time at the end of each day to prepare for the assessment on the last day. The theory is taught by the Ayurvedic doctors in attendance over a number of days with the addition of recorded lectures prior to the start of the course. The practical assessment takes place on the last day of the course. The theory exam is completed online approximately 4 weeks after the completion of the teaching.

The Intensive for Ayurveda practitioners – 6 days

This intensive course is ideal for those with prior knowledge of Ayurveda, especially for students of the Ayurvedic Lifestyle & Nutrition Course (Level 1) or the Ayurvedic Practitioners Course (Level 2). The theory is taught principally via recorded lectures and one day of teaching by our Ayurvedic doctors. The practical assessment is held on the last day of the course and the written theory paper (a combination of multiple choice and short questions) approximately 4-5 weeks after.

Home study
Depending on the student’s prior medical/anatomy and physiology knowledge and as a guide, students undertake maximum 20-30 hours home study for the whole course in addition to the teachings (this is to prepare for the theory exam).
The home study hours include directed reading from the course reference book, course materials and practice of the techniques.

Home Practice
Students are encouraged to practice the techniques at home on volunteers or with other students. In the case of the Intensive March course, there is additional supervised practice time allowed during the week in class to catalyze learning the techniques.

How is the student assessed?
Intensive course
Students will be assessed on their practical skills on the last day of the intensive course. The theory exam is taken online approximately 4-5 weeks after the completion of the course
What are the attendance requirements?
Students are required to attend a minimum of 6 of the 7 teaching days, plus the examinations (if they wish to qualify as Ayurvedic Massage Therapists).
Who are the course tutors?

Dr Deepika Rodrigo B.A.M.S.
The principle lecturer and a senior Ayurvedic physician, having been extra-ordinarily in continuous clinical practice for almost 25 years. She is widely recognised as a major driving force behind the growing awareness of Ayurveda in the UK. She has 20 years of teaching experience including the post as senior lecturer at the College of Ayurveda, Westminster University, Middlesex University where she trained many of today’s leading Ayurvedic specialists. As a director of the Ayurveda Institute UK and the principle lecturer in all courses she conducts, Dr Rodrigo is a prolific teacher investing an enormous number of face-to-face hours with her students.
She has been practicing from her established, London based Ayurvedic Clinic, since 2000 and uniquely amongst her peers, has a wealth of clinical experience to bring to her teaching.

Dr Wathsala Wijesinghe B.A.M.S., MSc, M.D
A senior Ayurvedic physician, having been in continuous clinical practice for almost 25 years. She has helped thousands of people to prevent, cure or manage a wide range of acute and chronic disorders, including women’s disorders, digestive disorders, skin problems and neurological disorders. Her experience has spanned treating people at grass roots level in rural communities to hospitals and private clinics in different countries.

She has been providing her services to the teaching of Ayurveda for 25 years at every level of education from schools to universities and educating rural communities. She has presented and conducted over 20 research works within the scientific community during her career.

Other teachers
The lecturer will be assisted by experienced senior massage therapists who have been in practice for a number of years at the Ayurvedic Clinic. We will also have business and practice management modules to assist in setting up and practising successfully.

Who can benefit from the course?
The course is open to both experienced therapists and those new to healing therapies.

The Ayurveda Institute is the only provider of Ayurvedic education in Europe offering teaching exclusively by highly experienced Ayurvedic physicians. Our lecturers decades of clinical experience as Ayurvedic physicians and in-depth knowledge of the authentic, traditional massage techniques and therapeutic benefits of Ayurvedic massage and herbal preparations. As such, this is perfect for those who wish to offer their clients authentic, therapeutic massage and help in alleviating imbalances and disorders in the body.

No prior knowledge is required. Mature students are very welcome.

Is the Diploma accredited?
The course is accredited by the CMA (Complementary Medical Association). Upon successful completion of the course, students can register themselves as Ayurvedic Massage Therapists and apply for insurance to practice with the CMA.

What qualification will I receive?

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will obtain a Diploma in Ayurvedic Massage Therapy and will be qualified to practice as an Ayurvedic Therapist. The student is then able to register as a therapist with the CMA (Complementary Medical Association).

Do I need to have knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology?
If you intend to practice as an Ayurvedic Therapist, knowledge of anatomy and physiology may be useful to you. There is no requirement to study anatomy and physiology to qualify for this course.

Students who are also undertaking the Diploma in Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition will benefit greatly from the study of anatomy and physiology to complete their education for practice.

The Ayurveda Institute is able to offer students of the Massage Therapy course an online short course in Anatomy and Physiology in association with our affiliate training body, at the special discounted price of £58.50. The promotional code for discounts will be given to students upon registration.

The Level 3 Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology is an FHT accredited Course and is awarded 20 CPD points. The course meets the current national occupational standards and covers all body systems. No attendance is required and all tutorials and assessments are delivered online, in your own time, from the comfort of your own home.

What other support is available for practice?
Recognising that there is an enormous disparity in the quality of Ayurvedic oils and products available on the market, the Institute committed to providing Ayurvedic therapeutic oils to therapists on a not-for-profit basis.
The oils and products are of the highest quality, purity and potency, sourced from the same trusted specialist facility which has been supporting the Ayurvedic Clinic for over 20 years.

The oils are specially designed for use in massage therapy, some of which are medicated and for specific therapeutic uses. The Institute provides the full ingredients lists for each oil and product as well as critical information on which dosha and which disorders they can be used for, as well as methods of use and contra-indications for use. This information is intended to support therapists to provide the highest quality treatment to their clients to help treat disorders.

It is intended to offer these items to massage therapists on a not-for-profit basis so that they are able to effectively treat clients at reasonable prices and earn income from the sale of oils, creams and products.

Can I learn Panchakarma treatments?
The Ayurveda Institute is one of the very few providers of training for authentic Panchakarma therapy, the deepest purifying Ayurvedic procedure used for detoxification and in the treatment of medical disorders. This is the most treatment that has been used in the Ayurvedic Clinic for almost 20 years, treating patients and helping them to maintain their health.

We offer a 4-day intensive Panchakarma technician training course once a year for those who have completed training in Abhyanga Marma Massage which covers specialist procedures and techniques applied according to the imbalance, dosha and disorder.

What practical arrangements do I need to know for the course?
The dress code is comfortable, professional attire to conduct massage therapy such as t-shirt and loose fitting pants (there is a facility to change clothes at the workshop). Students are required to bring two large bath towels. All other equipment including couch covers, wet wipes, oils and herbal preparations are provided.

What is the course syllabus?
The syllabus is set out below in skeleton form. We highly recommend that you download our Prospectus for a detailed syllabus. There is enormous depth and breadth to the subjects covered in this intensive course. The subjects have been carefully chosen and critically focus on a students ability to use massage therapy and the different procedures for the treatment of disorders, drawing upon the foundational therapeutic knowledge of Ayurveda.

Module 1 – Fundamentals of Ayurveda
Philosophy & history of Ayurveda

  • The history of Ayurveda and the Samkhya philosophy of creation
  • The body-universe relationship (Brahmanda-pinda theory)
  • Theory of 5 elements (Pancha Mahabuta theory) and the theory of macrocosm and microcosm

Introduction of basic principles of Ayurveda

  • Three biological humors or constitutions (Tri-dosha)
  • Principles of mental constituents (sattva, rajas, tamas)
  • Determining individual body constitution (prakruti)
  • Introduction to bodily tissues (saptta dhatu), waste products (trimala), channels (srotas)

Module 3 – Principles and techniques of massage

  • Marma Mardana; introduction to 108 marma points

Module 4 – Shirodhara and other specific treatments

  • Location of marma points in head and neck area

What written course materials are provided?
The Ayurveda Institute course materials will be distributed to participants electronically prior to the commencement of the course and in hard copy at the start of the course. The materials are a 90-page, comprehensive set of tailor made course notes to support the teaching weekends.

Where used, students will be PowerPoint presentations in electronic form also.

What text books are provided?
Students will be provided with a copy of the course reference book, “Ayurvedic Massage: Traditional Indian Techniques for Balancing Body and Mind” by Harish Johari. These will be distributed at the beginning of the course. Students can also pick up their own copy in advance from us. We can send out the books at an additional cost of £5.00 postage.
How do we practice massage techniques?
The majority of the course is teaching massage techniques. Students will be given demonstrations by the teachers and asked to perform the techniques themselves repeatedly in order to gain sufficient practice under the supervision and guidance of the teachers.
Students will be asked to form pairs and perform the massage techniques on each other. This allows the student to practice the technique and also to learn how it feels when performed on them, which increases their understanding.
What other materials are available to help me practice techniques?
Students have access to a library of recorded videos demonstrating:

How is the student assessed?
The examination consists of 3 parts:

Theory
There will be a two hour written paper which will be a combination of practical case studies, theory questions and multiple choice questions.

Practical
There will be a half an hour practical exam on the final day of the course

Case studies
Students are required to submit a case study by the end of the course

What are the course fees?
The total cost of the course is £1,120.00.
Students who have either completed or are currently studying the Diploma in Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition are entitled to a 25% discount (cost of the course is £840.00)
Deposit of 50% of the course fee to be paid to secure a place. The balance to be paid 14 days prior to commencement of the course. Further payment plans are at the discretion of the Directors.
Withdrawals and refunds
The deposit is non-refundable. The remainder of the course fee is refundable if notice is provided 14 days prior to the commencement of the course.
Withdrawals and refunds

If you wish to withdraw from the course you must apply in writing to the Directors.

For students who have paid the full course fees:

  • For withdrawal before the first immersion weekend, you are entitled to a full refund less 10% of the full cost of the course for administrative costs
  • For withdrawal before the second immersion weekend, you are entitled to a refund less 25% of the full cost of the course
  • For withdrawal between the second and third immersion weekend, you are entitled to a refund of 50% of the full cost of the course
  • After the third immersion weekend, no refunds can be made

For students who are paying in instalments:

  • For withdrawal before the first immersion weekend, you are entitled to a full refund of the deposit less 10% of the full cost of the course for administrative costs
  • For withdrawal before the second immersion weekend, you are entitled to a refund less 25% of the full cost of the course
  • After the second immersion weekend, no refunds can be made.
What are the entry requirements?
The course is open to both experienced therapists and those new to healing therapies. No prior knowledge is required. Mature students are very welcome.
